Nursing - Gleeson Bocce Challenge 072809 092

Gleeson Library and the School of Nursing took a break from our summer projects to convene for a pleasant, interdepartmental potluck and a spirited game of bocce ball on the lush green lawns outside of Gleeson Library.  Two teams, in two rounds, from both departments displayed sleeper athletic skills, superior hand-eye coordination, and departmental pride, until the final round comprising all the winners of the previous four games.

Dean Tyrone Cannon of Gleeson Library, and Dean Judith Karshmer of the School of Nursing

Commenced by Dean Judith Karshmer of the School of Nursing, and Dean Tyrone Cannon of Gleeson Library, there was cheering, there was commentary, there was some measuring going on!  And, of course, there was the obligatory wave!

All in all, the event marked a wonderful, much-needed, midsummer break from the hectic schedules of our two, very busy departments.  Gleeson Library was honored to play with such talented, polite company — with a serious cheerleading squad and not so small talent in cooking.  We were grateful for the invitation to play.

After the final round, trophies were generously awarded to the winning players by Nursing’s Ryan Dougherty, but we won’t tell you who won the 2009 Bocce Tournament.  It’s really all about the camaraderie and  friendship that Gleeson Library has developed with the remarkable and talented staff of the School of Nursing.  And ultimately, aren’t we all one team here at USF?

The Wave!

The Wave!

There was, however, a somber departure from the School of Nursing at the end of it all.  I wonder what that was all about?  ;)

Hello! The Book Club’s next selection is Alive in Necropolis by Doug Dorst, which is the San Francisco Public Library’s 2009 pick for One City One Book.

We will meet to discuss the novel on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 from 12 noon – 1 pm in the USF Community Garden (just west of the Education Building).

How can I get a copy?

Gleeson Library does not yet own this book, but now owns this book, and if it’s checked out you can get it delivered to Gleeson within 4 business days by requesting it through our free service, Link+, or you can get it from one of the many San Francisco Public Library Branch locations.

San Francisco Public Library has a webpage devoted to the selection with a lot of cool resources, like interviews with the author, reviews of the book, a reader’s guide and more! SFPL describes the novel:

Dorst’s thriller, set in the city of San Francisco and the cemeteries of Colma, is one part crime novel, one part ghost story, tinged with humor and heart. Among many colorful characters, the book features a rookie Colma cop navigating a world of both the dead and alive, and a San Francisco teen, struggling with his own version of reality.

Sounds cool! We hope to see you there.

Since the book club is venturing into the world of graphic novels this month*, we decided to highlight some the library has acquired in the last couple of years. The last time we featured our graphic novel collection, the exhibit resulted in positive attention and suggestions that were used to guide our collection development. So, featured in the lobby this summer are selections from the library’s recent acquisitions. Here’s the list. All the books are available to check out for your summer reading pleasure.

The books include everything from The Cartoon History of the Universe to a comic book version of the Mahabharata, from The Sweeter Side of R. Crumb to The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom to Che: A Graphic Biography. The graphic novel with the longest title on display is The Fatal Bullet: a True Account of the Assassination, Lingering Pain, Death, and Burial of James A. Garfield, Twentieth President of the United States, also Including the Inglorious Life and Career of the Despised Assassin Guiteau. And the book with the most pages must be Gravity’s Rainbow Illustrated: One Picture For Every Page.

To find more graphic novels in Ignacio, the library catalog, search for the subject “graphic novels”. Or browse the 3rd floor stacks in the vicinity of PN 6727 and PN 6728 — many, but not all, are shelved there.

*If you’ve been hesitant to read a graphic novel, don’t worry, “graphic” just  refers to the use of illustrations. “Graphic novel” is a format in which pictures and text work together to carry a narrative.
