Have you seen the library’s letter of gratitude to graduating student assistants? Stop by and see the letter, as well as a display of the books that have been dedicated to these students.

We’ll miss all of our student assistants and student users over the summer.  If you’re taking classes and/or hanging out in the city, though, we’ll be open so please come on by!

Announcing a New Library Service for USF Faculty

Image

Gleeson Library/Geschke Center is pleased to announce a new service for USF Faculty: Document Delivery.

As you may know, Gleeson has been delivering library books to Faculty for a few years. Now, Faculty can request electronic delivery of journal articles, book chapters, microfilm, and government documents from the library’s print or digital collections. Going forward, the library will make every effort to fill all requests, whether we have the material in a bound volume, in a database we subscribe to, or in almost any other form.

Faculty can make Document Delivery requests easily through ILLiad.  Gleeson has used ILLiad for years to deliver journal articles and other material requested from other libraries. We’ve enhanced ILLiad to facilitate the request and delivery of material that we have here.

Questions? Feel free to contact us. We hope you find this new service useful!

Write a Letter at the Library!

Come write a letter at the library this Thursday, February 14th!  We’ll provide some supplies (paper, pens, stamps, envelopes) and inspiration (books about letter writing, books about famous authors’ correspondence, manuscripts and sonnets on display in the Rare Book Room). Because sometimes an email (to your best friend, grandma, parents, partner) just won’t do…

Reach for the stars on all of those finals, Dons. Don’t forget, Gleeson is open 24 Hours until Thursday 12/13!

And in case you’re planning ahead: Library Hours for Christmas Break, Intersession, and Spring are now posted here.

P.S. Have you seen the Library’s Book Christmas Tree yet? The picture above shows about 1-2% (or 15-30 books) of the total books (1,500!!) that we used to build the entire tree.

Hours for Christmas Break, Intersession, and Spring Semester 2012
are now posted on the library’s website here:

Merry Christmas, and we’ll see you in the New Year!!

This year, Gleeson Library’s “Book” Christmas Tree reached 9ft 9in tall. We used close to 700 National Union Catalog books to build the tree, and estimate that this royal tannenbaum weighs over 3000 pounds. We decorated the tree with apples, popcorn (which we strung ourselves), cinnamon sticks, candy canes,
and old card catalog cards.

Library Hours, Fall 2011

“I have always had school sickness, as others have seasickness. I cried when it was time to go back to school long after I was old enough to be ashamed of such behavior.”

- Jacques Derrida (source, p. 373)

Really, Derrida?  We’ve always been sort of excited for school to start!

We’ve got librarians, books, articles, computers, copiers, newspapers, staplers,
a new student plaza (named Gleeson Plaza!!) …
and even a tissue if you happen to need it.

All is calm. All is bright.

itweetUSF wrote a wonderful “monday haiku” on Twitter this morning:
“Campus is quiet/I miss you all already/Go back to sleep now.”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
When you do wake up from your winter hibernation, though, we’ll be here:

This year, our Book Christmas tree turned out to be over 9 feet tall, with 2 saplings next to it. We used almost every volume of the National Union Catalog to build the trees, and our student assistants folded origami cranes to decorate them. In one of the pictures above, you can see our award winning Cable Car Book Cart in the background.

Elevator Back in Action!

Update:

The preventative maintenance work on our elevator has been completed…ahead of schedule!

——————————————————————————————————————-

Please note: due to preventative maintenance work, the library elevator that travels from the lower level all the way to the fourth floor is currently out of service. It will be back in action on Friday, 9/17/2010.

In the meantime, there are stairs to the lower level and fourth floor, and our second elevator, near the circulation desk, travels from the first to the third floor of the library. Between the hours of 8:30 and 5:00 pm, please contact the Student Disabilities Services Office at 422-2613 or use the ramp on the west side of the building (leading to SDS) for wheelchair access to the lower level of Gleeson.

Holds, Pages, and Deliveries Service Interruption — Update: It’s Fixed!

UPDATE:

It’s fixed! Requests for holds, pages, and deliveries placed online are now going through. Feel free to use the “Request It” links and buttons in the library catalog!

Until today, we didn’t know the links and buttons had been malfunctioning and it looks as though the problem had been going on for about a week.  Luckily, all holds, paging, and delivery requests that were made during the down time have been recovered, and we’re currently processing these requests.  Thank you for your patience. If you have any questions, please email us at access_services@usfca.edu or call 415-422-2662.

———————————————————————————————————

We’ve discovered that requests for holds, pages, and deliveries placed online today are not going through.  Please don’t use the “Request It” links and buttons in the library catalog until further notice. Sorry for the inconvenience; we will, of course, let you know as soon as we get this fixed!

Library Hours – Fall 2010

In the Library

by Dorothea Grossman

The library always smells like this:
an ancient stew of vinegar and wood.

It’s autumn again,
and I can do anything.

Click Here to view Gleeson Library/Geschke Center Hours for Fall 2010

p.s. Don’t worry, Gleeson doesn’t have the pervasive smell Grossman’s poem describes, but you might say the Fall Semester – new classes! new friends! new books! new projects! –  is a little bit, well, magical around here…

See you soon!

Gleeson Library is Celebrating National Poetry Month…

And you can, too!

Check out a book (or multiple books!) from our National Poetry Month display, featuring Bay Area and California Poets:

and join us at the 2nd Annual Staff and Faculty Poetry Reading on Thursday, April 29th @ 5:30pm in the Library’s Rare Book Room:

See you soon!

(Special thanks to Rob Guillen for the photos of our display and to Rob Kroenert for letting us use his awesome photograph of St. Ignatius on our flyer).
